I have a VPS with Cpanel accounts

I would like to know is it possible to upload files to the cpanel hosting via ftp that are not viewable by people going to my website ?

For instance I have a word doc file I would like to upload for backup purposes and don't want anyone on the internet to view this file

    Can this be done ?

If you are using FTP with the cPanel account, create a subdirectory of the "/" directory. If you are using SFTP, create a subdirectory of the "/home/(username)/" directory. Files you upload to that directory will not be visible to anyone on the internet.

you can also password-protect a directory if you want to be able to access the file from a web browser but prevent anyone else from accessing it. it's in the cPanel somewhere.
