Naming the "hostname" - proper method?

Howdy folks,

When my VPS started up, I just accepted the default hostname, which was something like this:

host.mydomain.com

So, that's what it currently is set at...

Is there any risk in using this default hostname, or should I change it to something else?

Also, if I do change it, will it mess up my websites, DNS or other settings?

There is no risk involved in changing your default hostname. Your websites, DNS etc. will not be impacted. The hostname is the server name you can see in your cPanel accounts. You can leave it to the default one if you prefer.
 
You can change it yourself just let KH know when you do so that they can update your RDNS.
