Joomla Permission Issue

Hi all,
I work with a lot of Joomla websites and have found that on my Knownhost Hybrid VPS - I am needing to use 777 permissions for the installs and for installing/configuring the extensions.

Obviously this is a HUGE security risk. But anything less than 777 does not work.

Has anyone else found this to be true? and can anyone shed some light on this for me?
