Do I use root for my site or create an account?

I am moving from shared hosting to this VPS and am a little confused.

I want to move my existing site and forum over to my VPS server, should I create a user account on my VPS for this site and upload it to there or should I upload it to the root of my VPS server?

I created a test user called Andy. The root of that account appears to be http://ipaddress/~andy and I can use this as I can my shared hosting. If I uploaded my site to that area and pointed my domain to my hosting, would I have to access it via http://ipaddress/~andy or is there a way to point each domain to each account as a seperate site?

Currently my hosting doesn't have any domain name associated with it and when I log to the IP address it gives me an apache page. Do I associate my domain name with my root account or with a created account?

Sorry for my questions, but I need to get my site moved by the end of the week to avoid being closed on my old host (outgrew it) and I am baffled with this new hosting :(

Thanks

Submit a ticket to support, if you are moving same Control panel (Eg. Cpanel to Cpanel, or Plesk to Plesk), they would move each and every thing to your new VPS (Files, Database, Emails...etc)

Well i my self don't know much about VPS and cpanel, i have used plesk, but I think what you have to do is, just create an account, create custom name servers, point your domain to those name servers.

I may be wrong :) lets wait for an expert to reply :D

I believe all that you need to do is to create account(s) for your domain(s) through WHM >> Account Functions >> Create a New Account, then upload your files, verify that everything is working as expected (i.e. use site preview available at http://ip-address/~acountname/) and then, if everything is fine, switch your domain registration information to point to your own nameserver names.

PS I'm moving this thread to Linux VPS - cPanel forum.

Paul

Thanks, this is starting to make sense to me now.

Would I create a name server for each domain name or just use the existing one and let the CPanel handle which account the domain is for?

Thanks

Nameservers creation is, in general up to you. You can point all domains to two nameserver names or you can register separate nameserver names for every domain hosted in your VPS. In most cases it makes sense to use same nameserver names for all hosted domains to simplify things

Thanks for your help.

I have to change my frame of mind from thinking like someone on a shared hosting plan to someone running a shared hosting plan :)
