Cpanel - Global Email Filters vs Spam Filters

Hello,

On Cpanel there are two options to deal with SP*M. One is at the Spam Filters section where one can select "Auto Delete" for mail that ranks a certain value. However in the section Global Email Filters there is also a way to set up a filter that can "Discard Message" beside a few other options.

Is there any difference in using one or the other?
Is there a difference between "Auto Delete" and "Discard Message"?
Finally is is better to delete / discard rather than "Fail with Message"?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forums! Personally I don't care for Auto Delete as you can miss an important email that may be triggered as spam. There's actually a way to 'train' Spamassassin to differentiate between good email and spam but it takes a little time and patience plus the email account needs to be set up as IMAP. POP won't work for this.

Basically, you move all your good mail to a folder named Good for example. Any spam goes to a folder named Spam. This is further explained in the article here: https://spamassassin.apache.org/full/3.0.x/dist/doc/sa-learn.html#getting_started

This page on cpanel's feature list has to do with email and global filters, email filters and spam filters that may be useful: https://documentation.cpanel.net/display/78Docs/cPanel+Features+List#EmailTab

Global filters are to create email filters for all of your cPanel account's email accounts. Email filters create email filters for a specific email address.

As for your last question, I prefer Discard as Fail with Message only tells a spammer that the address is a good one they can keep spamming to.

Hope this helps!

I thought I had good knowledge of Exim and spamassassin but I totally forgot about those two folder setup and the "learn" command with ham and spam folder!

I'll have to investigate more on the Discard. I've always use Fail as it is still cPanel recommended in Tweak settings of WHM.

Thanks for sharing!
