clickthrough rates, conversion rates and website profits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why A\/B Test<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay per click ads are expensive<\/strong>.\u00a0 Either they performs, or they drains the budget quickly.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2015\/05\/21\/how-much-does-adwords-cost\">average cost of a click on Google Ads<\/a> (formerly Adwords) is somewhere between $1 and $2 per click on the search network, and under $1 on the display network.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/data-whats-good-ctr-cpa-conversion-rate-adwords-2018\/248947\/\">rates vary<\/a><\/strong> from .1% to 1% on display to 1% to 3.75% on search (depending on your sector and source of this data).\u00a0 Some companies convert much less frequently, others more frequently &#8211; so take the average as just that &#8211; it&#8217;s an average.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, clicks may cost you $5 or $20 a click and you may convert at 2%.\u00a0 A 2% conversion rate means you need 50 clicks to get a conversion.<\/p>\n<p>$5 x 50 = $250 per conversion<\/p>\n<p>$20 x 50 = $1000 per conversion<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Changing conversion rates from 1% to 2% can <strong>double your revenue<\/strong>, while keeping your costs the same, effectively doubling your gross profit margin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of things you can do &#8216;right&#8217; to improve your marketing &#8211; but there&#8217;s also <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knownhost.com\/blog\/drop-these-marketing-habits\/\">several &#8216;bad&#8217; marketing habits to avoid<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Google Ads Approaches<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only looking at text ads in the search network, the author has been experimenting with various ads (A\/B testing) to see what can be tweaked in order to get what results.\u00a0 Some have excellent clickthrough rates (over 30%).\u00a0 Some have excellent conversion rates (over 30%).\u00a0 Oddly, <strong>the ones that bring in the most money, while costing the least (best cost per conversion) are the ones with decent CTR (3% to 5%) and decent CPA (5%)<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are some exceptions, but this is largely the rule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are two approaches&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Run Multiple Versions Simultaneously<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set up several ad variations and let them run for a period<\/strong> (typically a week or two) so that you <strong>get sufficient data<\/strong> about how they&#8217;re doing.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re getting impressions and clicks but not conversions then either the period is too short, and you need more data, or the landing page doesn&#8217;t have a compelling offer, or your ads are saying one thing and your landing page another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll assume you&#8217;re getting some impressions, clicks and conversions.\u00a0 Login to Google Ads, click on Search Campaigns, pick your campaign that&#8217;s being tested\/worked on, and then click Ads &amp; Extensions.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll see a grid with ads and the performance stats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ad\u00a0 \u00a0 (and because of the great CTR will likely get automatically shown more often than others).\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t always the case&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The point being &#8211; you <strong>start with several ads and get some data about what works and what doesn&#8217;t.\u00a0 It&#8217;s your baseline starting point.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You now know that you&#8217;re able to convert at a 2% rate with a cost per conversion of $100.\u00a0 The goal will be to improve on that result!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Run One, Clone, Tweak, Run Another<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this approach, you <strong>start with a known baseline performer<\/strong>, like the ad above which has a 20% CTR, 2% conversion rate and a CPC of $100.\u00a0 Take the baseline ad, clone it, tweak it, and run it against the known.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Take the ad in question, keep 75% of it the same, but<strong> tweak some aspect<\/strong>.\u00a0 In other words, you might want to:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; make a different offer, like:\u00a0 from $6.97\/month<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; make a different call to action, like:\u00a0 Sale Ends Today or Buy Now and Save<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; switch USP&#8217;s, like:\u00a0 Fully Managed or 100% Fully Managed&#8230;\u00a0 Free cPanel, Migrations and Domains&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The important thing to remember is to <strong>switch just one aspect<\/strong> of the ad.\u00a0 Set it to run next to your existing ad and see which one outperforms the other over the next week or two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you <strong>continue this process over time<\/strong>, pause the lesser performing ad, keep the best one running, tweak another aspect of the ad, and compare.\u00a0 Rinse, lather, repeat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Which Ad is Best<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Looking at Click Through Rate and Cost Per Conversion, you could automatically choose the one with the best Cost Per Conversion &#8211; after all, it&#8217;s bringing in the most revenue per $1 spent.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s not the most that&#8217;s doing the best job of driving traffic to the site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remember, <strong>high CTR means lower cost per click<\/strong> &#8211; because Google wants to show ads that get more clicks &#8211; it&#8217;s how they get paid.\u00a0 They reward high CTR ads by showing them more often, more predominantly, and giving a higher quality score, so they are cheaper for companies to run.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have a look at the ads with the best CTR and see <strong>why they&#8217;re getting the most clicks<\/strong> per 1,000 impressions.\u00a0 Often it&#8217;s because of things like:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Use of numbers, punctuation and combinations of upper\/lower case<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Use of dynamic keyword insertion macros {where Google inserts the search phrase in the advert}<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Use of the keyword phrase multiple times &#8211; in the title and description text of the ad<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Use of the keyword in the display path (URL)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emulate the attention getting approach of the high clickthrough rate ads and apply that to the best conversion rate ads, so that you get eyes on site, who then buy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the best of both worlds.\u00a0 Doing this, you&#8217;ll find your cost per click goes down, lowering your cost per conversion and improving profitability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Modern Google Ads A\/B Testing<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Realizing that people will be wanting to do A\/B testing, Google has tried to make it a bit easier to conduct.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can create ad variations with ease using the tools within Google Ads (<strong>look at the bottom for the Drafts &amp; Experiments menu option)<\/strong>.\u00a0 It allows you to quickly search and replace, so you can substitute words\/phrases
